Treatment
The following information describes the various operations involved in dealing with the problem of wood-rotting fungi or infestations of wood-boring insects in timber. One of a range of specially formulated APS fungicides or insecticides, selected to suit the particular requirements of the work, will be used to deal with the infestation. It will also be necessary in the case of wood-rotting fungi, in addition to the work practices described below, to deal with the root cause of the problem. Namely the source or sources of water ingress which have created conditions suitable for fungal decay. The APS 30 Year Guarantee will be issued on completion of the work and payment of the account. The work practices described below will be varied as circumstances dictate.
General Working Practices
- Isolate the relevant electrical circuits in the treatment area by the removal of fuses from the main fuse box.
- Protect floors and or staircases that form the access route to the treatment area and erect protective screens as necessary.
- Protect floor coverings or insulations within the treatment area, as necessary.
- Remove or protect items such as furniture, or stored items within the treatment area.
- Protect water tanks and remove from or protect thermal insulation material in the treatment area as necessary.
- Remove and replace severely decayed or infested timbers, as necessary.
- Remove floorboards, or other materials, within the treatment area, to allow access to other timbers.
- Repair other decayed timbers as necessary.
- Protect timbers within the treatment area which are in direct contact with wet masonry.
- Prepare the exposed timber surfaces so as to facilitate the penetration of the APS insecticidal formulation.
- Apply the APS insecticidal formulation to the exposed timber surfaces.
- Replace any removed floorboards, and treat with the APS insecticidal formulation.
- Apply fungicidal paste to the cut ends of any retained or replacement timbers. Encase each end with a damp proof course.
- Replace any other material removed, as necessary.
- Remove all debris from the work area, ensuring that the site is left clean and tidy.
Additional Working Practices for treatments against the Dry Rot Fungus
- Protect exposed junction boxes and the ends of electrical conduits within the treatment area.
- Cut back decayed timbers to beyond the last visible signs of fungal growth.
- Remove wall plaster and other wall finishes to beyond the last visible signs of fungal growth.
- Remove ceiling linings and cornices, as necessary.
- Clean down the exposed masonry surface.
- Apply a fungicidal formulation to the exposed masonry surfaces, either by surface spray or drilling and irrigation, as required.
- Re-instate the wall plaster or other wall finishes that were removed, and leave ready for client's final decoration.
Damp Proof Course Specification
The following information describes the various operations involved in dealing with the problem of rising damp in masonry walls.
- It will usually be necessary, in addition to the work practices described below, to remove and replace plaster or other finishes on walls which have been subjected to rising damp.
- The APS 30 Year Guarantee will be issued on completion of the work and payment of the account. The following work practices will be varied as circumstances dictate.
General Working
- Isolate the relevant electrical circuits in the treatment area by the removal of fuses from the main fuse box.
- Protect items immediately adjacent to the wall surfaces at low level.
- Remove wall plaster or other wall coverings to a minimum height of 18" (455mm) above the damp line, where necessary.
- Drill 10mm diameter holes in the walls at a spacing of 125mm, and to the required depth (two thirds of the wall thickness).
- External holes are to be drilled at a minimum height of 150mm above the external ground level, making allowances for any slope.
- Pressure inject the calculated quantity of the APS Dampcourse formulation into each hole.
- Fill in all external holes with waterproof cement.
- Fit existing skirting boards, or new where necessary, to the exposed internal wall areas.
- Remove all debris from the worksite, ensuring that the area is left clean and tidy.
- DPC Injection is carried out in accordance with BS 6576, 1985. The materials used satisfy the requirements of the British Board of Agreement (BBA), with regard to The Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations 1981 to 1987.
